Understanding MeRT for Autism

What is MeRT?

MeRT® (Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy) is an emerging technology. This non-invasive, individualized form of neuromodulation uses magnetic stimulation (TMS) to enhance brain communication. Using data from an EEG (electroencephalogram) and an EKG (electrocardiogram), we identify areas of brain dysregulation and design a tailored treatment plan to support optimal function.

Traditional TMS applies the same stimulation pattern to all patients, while MeRT is customized based on each patient’s unique brainwave activity. MeRT uses gentle magnetic pulses, informed by brain data, to directly encourage improved connectivity.

Yes. MeRT is noninvasive, well-tolerated, and requires no sedation or medications. It’s been used safely in thousands of children with a range of neurodevelopmental needs. At our clinic, every treatment is closely monitored and delivered by experienced clinicians.

We’ve worked with children as young as three, as well as adolescents and young adults. There’s no strict age cutoff. If your child can sit still for short sessions, we can likely adapt treatment to their needs.

Autism Treatment Process

What happens during the initial evaluation?

Your first visit includes a consultation with our team and a detailed review of your child’s developmental and medical history. If MeRT is a good fit, we’ll perform a baseline EEG and EKG. These tests are painless and allow us to assess brainwave activity and build a custom treatment plan.

A typical course of MeRT lasts 4 to 6 weeks, with treatment sessions five days a week. Each session takes about 30–45 minutes. Midway through the program, we perform another EEG to evaluate progress and make any necessary adjustments.

Most children describe it as feeling like a light tapping on the scalp. There’s no pain or downtime, and many kids quickly adapt to the routine.

Yes. Parents and caregivers are welcome to remain in the treatment room to provide comfort and support.

No, you can continue other therapies like ABA, speech, or OT, alongside MeRT. Many families find that MeRT helps improve attention and regulation, making other therapies more effective. Get more information here.

What to Expect During and After Autism Treatment

When will we start seeing changes?

Each child is different. Some show improvements in the first few weeks, while others take longer. Our team tracks progress closely and will keep you updated throughout the process.

Parents commonly report:

  • Better eye contact
  • Increased use of language
  • Calmer behavior
  • Improved sleep
  • Greater social awareness

Changes may be subtle at first, but often build over time and carry through to other areas of development.

Many families find that the benefits of MeRT are long-lasting. In some cases, children may benefit from periodic follow-up sessions. We’ll work with you to determine what’s best for your child’s long-term success.

If you need to pause or stop treatment, our team will guide you through the next steps. Even a partial course of MeRT can result in improvements, although full treatment is recommended for optimal results.
